On episode 5 of Season 4 on the Podcast we are talking to Dr. Lexie Kite. Dr. Lexie Kite is a co-author with her identical twin Dr. Lindsay Kite of the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament and co-director of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined. She received a PhD from the University of Utah in the study of female body image and has become a leading expert in body image resilience and media literacy. Lindsay and Lexie help girls and women recognize and reject the harmful effects of objectification in their lives through their significant social media reach, online Body Image Resilience course and facilitator program for dieticians and therapists, their popular book (More Than a Body), and regular speaking engagements for thousands of people of all ages. We hit on alot of new topics today around body image, a couple to look out for are body image resilience and body neutrality. We are back! In Season 3 we covered all things Parenting, ranging from how to talk to your kids about race and racism to how to talk to them about the birds and the bees, and everything in between. Since wrapping up Season 3, we took some time off to spend time with our family and to take a big deep breath. This leads us to our theme for this series: Wellness. This is all about how to build and sustain healthy relationships. What does it look like to be a healthy YOU? And eventually a healthy WE. This week we are hearing from Claudine Miles. She is a consultant and educator who has previous experience with Teach for America and the CDC. Additionally, she is the co-founder of Restore More, a local non-profit that supports organizations with building capacity for restorative practices, self-awareness, & social-emotional learning. In this episode, you can listen out for these three things: Dwayne White, the word ‘colorblind’, and the white dads. This episode shows how bias is not inherently a bad thing, but learning what to do with your bias and how to grow from it is vital. Additionally, Miles emphasizes the importance of getting kids involved with a diverse community early on.
